Artificial Intelligence

Paper Topic #1

Due:  February 7, 2012 by midnight

This paper is only for students enrolled in AI under the course PHIL 372.  Students enrolled in AI under CMSC 372 must complete the first pac-man project.

Topic

Read Turing's paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence.

Turing's "conversation" view of AI contends that if a machine acts as intelligently as a human being in a natural language conversation, then it can be considered to have human-level intelligence.  Discuss Turing's argument and its relationship to modern versions of the Turing Test and AI technology.  Then, discuss what you consider to be the strongest counterargument to Turing's perspective.  You are welcome to consult outside sources while completing this paper.
