Before class 4, please:
Skim Shotts, Ch. 5. The only commands in this chapter I use with any regularity are type
, man
(which I use a lot), and alias
.
Read Shotts, Ch. 6. This chapter introduces some of the more powerful features of command-line interaction, rising above the listing of commands in previous chapters. The next lab will require an understanding of these topics.
Read Shotts, Ch. 7. This chapter describes perhaps-unexpected tips and tricks of command entry. I use the techniques here often.
Skim Shotts, Ch. 8. More tips and tricks here, these about using the keyboard while entering commands. While useful, these are all optional.
With the first 8 chapters of Shotts under your belt, you will be well equipped at the command line. While we will continue to expand your level of comfort and mastery here, the sprint to productivity is over.
